Abstract: This educational journey is dedicated to exploring the intricate relationships among craft, innovation, livelihoods, and communities within the Sargalaya Kerala Arts & Craft Village located in Iringal, Vadakara, Kozhikode district. By immersing students in this context, the program aspires to foster a deep-rooted appreciation for craft practices and a comprehensive understanding of the social, cultural, and economic dimensions associated with them.
Sargalaya operates as an organization that not only revitalizes traditional art and craft practices but also empowers marginalized segments of society, particularly women. It enables them to engage in arts and crafts activities while creating sustainable livelihoods. This unique setting offers students a distinctive perspective on cooperative sectors and the development of a circular economy around art and craft practices, rendering them highly relevant to the contemporary landscape. The program includes a one-week immersion at Sargalaya, featuring a field visit to the Kunhimangalam Bell Metal Craft Village in Kannur. By involving students in an environment rooted in core traditional craft practices, the program aims to cultivate a perspective that enables them to perceive craft as an integral part of artisans' lives.
Throughout this learning journey, students will also gain exposure to essential research methods, such as interviews, mapping, photography, and sketching. The culmination of this unit will be marked by an exhibition in which students showcase their insights through interactive exhibits
